SpamAssassin is an automated email filtering system that attempts to identify spam messages based on the content of the email's headers and body. Each filter is assigned a weight and the final tally determines the score of the message, and whether or not it should be marked as spam.
What is a required_score? A required score is the spam score required for SpamAssassin to mark an email as spam. Each failed test will add a score to a message.
What is blacklist_from? These fields allow you to specify addresses that you DO NOT wish to receive mail from, even if SpamAssassin does not mark the mail as spam.
What is whitelist_from? These fields allow you to specify addresses that you DO wish to receive mail from, even if SpamAssassin does mark the mail as spam.
What is rewrite_header_subject? This allows you to automatically change the subject on any messages marked as spam. For example, if you enter ****SPAM**** in this field, all messages marked as spam will have ****SPAM**** placed in their subject automatically.
Spam Auto Delete
You can automatically delete messages marked as spam. First set the number score required before mail is considered spam. 5 is the default setting. The higher the number, the more conservative or looser the setting. If you want to be more strict to allow for less spam lower the setting one number at a time and test in between changes.
SpamBox
The SpamBox, when enabled, allows emails identified as spam by SpamAssassin to be delivered to a separate mail folder named "spam" for EACH email account that you have set up. If these folders are not regularly checked and emptied, it may cause your email or file system quotas to be exceeded, resulting in a failure to receive legitimate messages. You can easily use Squirrel or Horde to check messages that are routed to this box since webmail will display the spam folder for you once you are logged into webmail.
If you wish to use pop3 to check the spam box, just add "/spam" (without the quotes) to the end of your pop3 login. Example: user@YourDomainName.tld/spam Note that if there is no spam in the box you may see an error.
SpamAssassin Configuration
You may configure several of the different settings for Spam Assassin.
Required Score: Set the number of hits required before a mail is considered spam. "n.nn" can be an integer or a real number. 5.0 is the default setting, however we suggest a setting of 4 or 3.8 for increased spam reduction.
Whitelist_from: (see above)
Blacklist_from: (see above)
Sorting spam with your email client
SpamBox is generally discouraged in favor of sorting and deleting spam messages using your mail client. Without using Spam Box, by default SpamAssassin will mark your email with an identifying subject (e.g. ***SPAM***), which can then be filtered out into an appropriate location. You can change the text of the tag by using the "Configure SpamAssassin" button
